Students should contact their departments to schedule the dissertation defense. Note that some departments do not schedule examinations in summer. The student should send copies of the dissertation to the members of the committee no later than three weeks prior to the defense. The chair of the student's dissertation committee and at least one other committee member must be present in person. In the case that a committee member is unable to attend in person, the committee member may participate by Skype or other teleconference media.
The defense must be open to all faculty within the department. Broader attendance will be left to the discretion of the student in consultation with the committee. Please note: For the academic year, there will be new policies regarding on-campus events and capacity due to the COVID pandemic.
Departments will be allowed to have in-person defenses so long as they follow specific protocols and have the defense approved first dependent upon gathering policies in place for Autumn. More information about these new policies and guidelines will be sent prior to the Autumn Quarter. The dissertation defense shall be an open presentation by the student on the main aspects of the research reported in the dissertation, followed by questions, comments, and discussion.
The chair of the dissertation committee or a designee shall act as the moderator of this discussion and shall have discretion to decide whether questions are germane to the topic of the dissertation. After discussion is completed, the departmental faculty in attendance and the dissertation committee will decide privately whether the dissertation defense has been satisfactory.
The dissertation chair or designee will report the results as soon as possible after the dissertation defense to the Dean of Students office by submitting a signed Report of Final Examination and a Dissertation Defense Form.
If the manuscript is to undergo revisions, the student will be informed of the timeframe in which the revisions are to be completed. A final copy of the dissertation must be submitted following the procedure outlined on the Dissertation Office website by Friday of the seventh week of the quarter in which a student is graduating, sixth week in summer quarter. Near the end, you will be asked to leave the room and they will talk amongst themselves.
For me, this was the most nerve-racking part of my dissertation defense. My presentation of my dissertation took about twenty minutes, though in reality it went by in a blur. The wait to return to the defense, however, felt like an eternity. It was surreal to know that my committee was on the other side of the door, deciding my future. It felt like that door would never open. My dissertation defense took a little over an hour, which is on the short side; it was efficient and professional.
Attendance at a dissertation defense is limited to you and your committee. Your dissertation chair also serves an important role as an advocate for your research. The total committee, including the chair, is usually people, making the dissertation defense an intimate affair.
Luckily, defending your dissertation should be the easy part. By the time you reach your dissertation defense, no one understands the inner workings of your research better than you do. During my dissertation defense, I remember being excited to have an opportunity to talk about my writing. It was a wonderful experience to have a dedicated time and place to talk about my work with a brilliant group of faculty whom I respected deeply. The dissertation defense also gave me a sense of completion, and of a job well done.
While there is no set list of questions asked during a dissertation defense, there are a few usual suspects that can help you prepare. You will likely be asked about the genesis of your research question, and how it was shaped by your literature review. You will also probably be asked about the theoretical underpinnings of your conceptual framework, and the critical scaffolding that brings it all together.
When trying to anticipate questions that may be asked during your dissertation defense, review your notes from previous meetings with your committee and chair. Were there any suggested changes to your prospectus? Did comments on your literature review lead you to broaden or narrow your focus? Any of these recommendations could be fair game for questions during your dissertation defense. The good news is, by the time a doctoral candidate has reached the point of having their dissertation defense scheduled, failing this final hurdle is incredibly unlikely.
Has it happened? Keep in mind, your committee is deeply invested in your success. During a defense, a student will be asked questions by members of the thesis committee. Questions are usually open-ended and require that the student think critically about his or her work.
They usually take around six-to-eight years to finish, but there are plenty of benefits to taking the long road to your doctorate.
Part-time students dedicate between hours a week to their studies, which leaves plenty of time for work or raising a young family. Just dress normal, normal, normal, nice. You pass with revisions. Your committee, supervisor, external or all three have revisions for you to incorporate into your thesis. You make the changes, and depending on the severity, either go back to the committee, or usually just get your supervisor to sign off.
This is the most common outcome. Submitting a doctoral dissertation is not the final step in the process. The candidate must still defend the dissertation, and the dissertation must be approved by the university faculty. Traditionally, a PhD involves three to four years of full-time study in which the student completes a substantial piece of original research presented as a thesis or dissertation.
