Where is teched 2011

Microsoft Scripting Guy, Ed Wilson, here. One of the highlights of TechEd in Atlanta was getting to know lots of really cool people. When Daniel was not doing a lab or attending a session, he stopped by the Scripting Guys booth to hang out and to talk to people as they came by the booth.

It turned out that the Scripting Guys booth was a great place to hang out and to meet new people. Here is a picture of the Scripting Wife, Daniel, and me while we were hanging out at the booth.

Once again TechEd provided passes to two winners of the Scripting Games. The passes go to one winner in each category, Beginner and Advanced. If the first place winner cannot attend TechEd, then the pass is offered to the second place winner and down the line until one of the participants is available to attend TechEd. This year we were happy to host Daniel Cruz as our Beginner event participant. I chose to enter the Scripting Games for one reason: to learn. Participating in the Games helped me learn to create clean, reusable scripts that I could proudly share with the world.

Microsoft has been the meat and potatoes of my professional career and I was pretty close to drooling as I browsed through hundreds of sessions, labs, and workshops in the TechEd catalog. Attending and absorbing the sessions was really only the first step; I spent time in most of them frantically jotting down notes for future studying.

After the official party came the unofficial party thrown by the AuTechHeads user group at a local bar. Around people enjoyed a few hours of drinks and entertainment thanks to the AuTechHeads core team and the vendors that sponsored the party.

As it was only the first night people mostly behaved themselves although one or two were clearly going to have a rough start to the conference the next morning. Although I love the social aspect of TechEd the sessions are the main reason that I am there.

It is good to get some variety and open yourself up to the other things going on in the IT world that you may not come across in your own job very often. You can check out the slides and videos of those sessions by clicking on the links.

My two favourite presenters were Andrew Ehrensing and Scott Schnoll , both Microsoft employees and both delivering high impact level sessions on Exchange and Lync The other main benefit of conferences such as TechEd is the chance to meet up with other IT pros. I lost count of how many former colleagues I bumped into while I was there and had a chat with, as well as all of the new people that I had never met or only met online before. The exhibitor hall is always popular with the crowd due to the free giveaways that are usually on offer.

It was a decent showing this year from the vendors. Microsoft had some cool demos of their new Lightswitch development tools, Microsoft Surface , and Xbox Kinect games for the fun stuff.

I also discovered PowerShell Plus from Idera. I will concede there may be a better way of identifying which sessions are vendor-centric and which are Microsoft-centric, so that people understand what they are sitting down to watch. But I would not personally stay away from a session just because a vendor is involved. Start the day well — eat a good breakfast with lots of protein to help keep you from getting hungry.

Microsoft released the first public beta of LightSwitch in August , and the second beta in March I'm thinking it might still be too early for hhints about the next Visual Studio, which may or may not be named Visual Studio But you never know.

I have noticed more than a few TechEd sessions around the "Crescent" PowerPivot successor are on tap Women and men are both invited. So if you're free, join us. Even though I'm not a programmer -- and nowhere near a ". Net Guru," I was allowed to sneak a recipe in, for my soon-to-be-infamous vegetarian chicken soup. I've seen the proofs and there are lots of fun recipes in there from Softies and non-Softies alike.

The book will be for sale in the TechEd bookstore this week, and a number of us "chefs" will be on hand to sign your copies.
