Salvi was the first to introduce an aluminum column covered in wood. New products, innovative, even revolutionary, constitute the present and the future of this instrument.
The lessons of Victor Salvi are more relevant than ever inside the laboratories of Piasco. Technology, innovation and performance are fundamental, but expected with the harp, Salvi designs and builds mainly with through the heart. You are commenting using your WordPress. In the 18th century the fundamental tuning was Eb major Ab major and Bb major were also common.
Mozart wrote his double concerto for flute, harp and orchestra in C major, K. This single-action pedal harp was exported to France where, years later, it was further developed to make a double-action pedal harp. On his instrument every string could twice be raised by a half tone. This was achieved by placing each string over two rotating discs, each of which had two pins. Every disc could be turned by operating a pedal: one pedal movement moved the upper disc, raising the pitch by a half tone, a second pedal movement turned the lower disc and raised the pitch a further half tone.
In this way it was possible to play in all twelve keys. The strings were tuned to Cb major and the 48 strings had a range which covered a total of over six octaves. It is on this principle that modern double-action pedal harps are based.
This new technology increased the number of possible playing techniques; new playing techniques and sound effects — such as glissando over a diminished seventh chord — were soon part of the repertoire not only of the soloist and chamber musician but also of musicians in the orchestra. Alphonse Jean Hasselmans Belgium, , refined the techniques known as the French method of harp playing, instructed many respected harpists while harp professor at the Paris Conservatoire.
Lily Laskine France, , harp prodigy with a long career including posts at the Paris Opera, Orchestre National de France, Theatre Francais and as professor of harp at the Paris Conservatoire; also a successful recording artist. Elias Parish-Alvars England, , considered one of the best harpists of all time; composer of concertos, fantasias and solos for harp, many still popular today.
Alberto Salvi Italy, , renowned harpist, performed many solo concerts in a time when more harpists were accompanists; performed in many operas; recorded with RCA Victor and was popular on radio.
Marcel-Lucien Tournier France, , harp virtuoso and composer; succeeded Hasselmans as professor of harp at the Paris Conservatoire. Nicanor Zabaleta , increased the popularity of the harp worldwide by aggressively touring and selling more than four million copies of his recordings. History of the Harp The harp occupies a position unique in the history of music. Irish Harps AD The frame harp, or a harp that included a straight forepillar or column in the modern sense , first appeared in Medieval Western Europe in the 8th to 10th centuries AD.
Diatonic Harps AD Harps in continental Europe differed from Irish harps in that the forepillar was thinner and less curved, the neck was more slender and it curved upward to meet the end of the column. Single-Action Pedal Harps AD Approximately , a less cumbersome way to get some chromatic notes from a single-strung harp tuned diatonically was introduced. Double-Action Pedal Harps AD The only drawback to the single-action harp was that not every key could be achieved for playing.
